Tips to get your sugarhouse ready for the season

Too Cold for Sap? Here’s What You Can Do Now

It’s that time of year when all sugarmakers start getting antsy, watching the thermometer and waiting for the sap to start flowing. But if it’s still too cold where you are, it would be a good idea to use this time to get everything in order so you’re ready to go when the season kicks in.

1. Clean & Check Your Equipment

When the sap starts running, you won’t have time for deep cleaning—so it’s best to do it now. Give your buckets, tanks, and evaporator a good scrub and rinse. Check for any cracks, leaks, or worn-out parts that need replacing. A clean setup means better-quality syrup.

2. Stock Up on Supplies

Once the season starts, supplies go fast. Make sure you have:

  • Enough buckets, spouts, and tubing for your trees and repairs
  • A hydrometer and cup to check for perfect syrup density (it’s a good idea to have a spare hydrometer on hand)
  • Defoamer and Filters so you’re ready to boil and filter your syrup
  • Plenty of containers to bottle the finished syrup
  • Don’t forget the brushes and cleaners for end-of-season cleanup.

3. Get Your Sugarhouse in Shape

Cold days are perfect for tidying up the sugarhouse. Sweep out the dust, check your evaporator, and ensure your pumps, valves, and RO system (if you use one) are all working properly. Get that firewood stacked and ready!

4. Plan Your Taps & Walk the Sugarbush

Take a walk through your woods and mark the trees you plan to tap. If you’re using tubing, check that it’s still secure and sloped properly. This can be a good time to add a few more taps to your tubing system.

5. Keep an Eye on the Weather

If you haven’t tapped yet, keep an eye on the weather. The best time to tap is when temperatures are below freezing at night (under 32°F) and warm up above 40°F during the day. Check your local forecast so you’re ready to tap as soon as conditions are right.

Be Ready When the Sap Starts Flowing!

Sugaring season can be short and come on fast—so use this cold spell to your advantage! A little prep now will make your season smoother and more productive.
