Rubber Candy Molds

Maple candy is great way to enjoy this natural sweetener. You can make it at home, just for fun, or expand your maple business. Unsurprisingly at Bascom Maple Farms, we carry the classic maple leaf molds in three different sizes, from the small 1/3oz to a large 2oz. But don’t forget to check out our many other shapes for fun, themed candies. There are snowflakes, snowmen, butterflies, farm animals, pumpkins, little Pilgrim styled men and maids as well as New Hampshire specific molds, just to mention a few.

New rubber candy molds, or those which have been out of use for an extended period of time, should be treated to avoid making candy that tastes “rubbery.”

Initial Treatment

Boil each mold in a pot of water mixed with baking soda (also called caustic soda) for 10-15 minutes. Use approximately 1/4lb of baking soda per gallon of water.

Scrub the mold with a semi-stiff brush and rinse thoroughly with clear cold water.

*If desired, apply a thin coat of food grade glycerin with a brush to new molds if the candy seems to be sticking. The glycerin should not need to be reapplied after the molds have been used. Most people do not coat them at all.

Cleaning and Storage

After use, cleaning your candy molds is a simple process. Place candy molds in warm water until any remaining sugar dissolves. Rinse with clear water and turn upside down on a rack to dry.

Molds should be stored away from direct sunlight or bright lights.

*If you do detect a bitter taste when making candies with new molds, it may be necessary to throw the first candies away. This will not be necessary once the molds have been broken in.
